 Shoney’s restaurant - standard buffet but nearby and quick (610 on north frontage road near Kirby)

Texas Woman’s Hospital Cafeteria – limited fare, but inexpensive. Get there before 10.

IHOP. East side of 610 at Beechnut (near Meyerland)

Goode Company at 5109 Kirby Drive (real western)

Pappas on Main near Target

Mexican –

Chuy’s on Westheimer (just W of Kirby) - get the steak burrito

Lupe Tortilla (2414 SW Freeway) on the feeder to 59 between Shepherd & Kirby - best fajitas

Little Pappasito’s (2536 Richmond Ave)

Molina’s 5227 Buffalo Speedway - get Jose Dip

El Tiempo on Richmond (1 mile w of Kirby)

Goode Company Taqueria (4902 Kirby) - good burgers & enchiladas

Don Carlos, 8385 Broadway near Hobby Airport. Casual and authentic.

American –

Backstreet Café – Wonderful ambience, Sunday jazz. For brunch, lunch and dinner. 1103 S. Sheppard at West Clay St.

Cleburne Cafeteria – Not your average cafeteria! (Bissonnet just west of Buffalo Speedway).

Raven Grill - 1916 Bissonnet on periphery of Museum District. One of my favorites (jelandry)

Asian –

Van Loc Restaurant (best Vietnamese in Houston) 3010 Milam St @ Elgin 713.528.6441

China Stix. (Inexpensive, take out, delivery or eat in.) Holcombe and Buffalo Speedway (713) 218-8100

PF Changs. Highland Village Center 4094 Westheimer Road (713) 627-7220)

French –

Café Rabelais. 2442 Times Blvd (in Texas Gas Building near Rice and Kirby) (713) 526-6841

Italian -

Carraba’s (the original.) On Kirby between Richmond & Westheimer. (Try the Chicken Bryan).

Cajun –

Captain Benny’s (on Main near Target). Funky and inexpensive, but good. Try the freshly shucked oysters.

Seafood –

Pappadeaux (2410 Richmond - between Shepherd & Kirby) - get mixed seafood grill or the crawfish platter

Goode Company Seafood (on Westpark - just W of Kirby) - good seafood but I prefer Pappadeaux

Pappas Seafood – 6945 I-45 S. @ Woodridge (just north of 610). Reasonably priced and fresh.

Burgers, etc. –

Houston’s (4848 Kirby -just S of 59) - good salads, soups, spinach dip, burgers

Ruggles Cafe (2365A Rice Blvd - Rice at Morningside) - Burgers, salads, deserts

Ice Cream –

Piccomolo (on Beechnut west of 610 just north of Meyerland shopping area) Nice shopping area too!

And, if you want to go upscale here are a few suggestions – reservations advised.

Brennan’s - 3300 Smith St (downtown) - Cajun seafood and much more - owned by Brennan family of New Orleans - Newly rebuilt after Hurricane Ike

Churrascos - South American style center cut steaks, signature Plantain chips and Tres Leches dessert.  Others in the city by Cordua Restaurants - Americas, Amazon Grill and Artista.

Mark’s-1658 Westheimer between Dunlevy and Ralph’s St. - American cuisine at its finest.

Pappas Steakhouse - best steakhouse in town - on Westheimer (near Chimney Rock just west of Galleria)

Damian’s - probably the best Italian in town - on Smith (downtown area - close to Brennan’s)

Trulucks – High end seafood, steak, crab house. Galleria area (5350 Westheimer Road (713) 783-7270)
